EPISODES

How did a guy named Tim come to define the dark and macabre world of skeletons, zombies and monsters? On this episode, we'll take a look at the most recognizable director of the last twenty years, Tim Burton. His work ranges from the kitschy Pee-Wee's Big Adventure to the blockbuster Batman to the dramatic Ed Wood to the, well, kitschy Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Join us as we give a bio, essential works, the world-famous Ten Quiz and a review of a great movie. Also, we’ll dip into the surprisingly stocked letter box to revisit some Spielberg.

Thanks for all the shout-outs in the Tim Burton show. I can see that you're going to have to be more selective with listeners' ten quizzes as you gain a larger audience. I'm glad we could agree and disagree peaceably. I hate that I dislike Pee Wee so much, but I couldn't stand him as a kid, and I can't stand him as an adult. No, I didn't overlook Planet of the Apes. I enjoyed it more as a generic action film than I did Pee Wee as... well, anything.

And while I agree completely with your "essential" picks, I can't help but think maybe a paranthese'd third choice would be Sleepy Hollow. It's not the best Burton story, or his most accomplished work, but I think its cold atmosphere perfectly sums up his style.

I really like Tim Burton's 90's work. You could tell what he was studying: He did a character peice about a B-sci fi movie director, followed it with a satire of B-sci fi movies (the extremely enjoyable Mars Attacks!), and then wrapped up the decade with his own B-horror movie, Sleepy Hollow, which he repeats as being an homage to Hammer horror films ad nauseum on the film's DVD commentary.

And yes, along with the Coen Bros. show, which I'm anxiously awaiting, I'd love to hear some shows about some foreign directors: Bergman, Truffaut, Kurosawa, maybe some Herzog...?

posted by: Ben Stark on Fri, 9/8 10:50 PM EDT

I hope our need to be "selective" does not inhibit listeners from submitting 10 quizes or other comments. It is great to get those and to incorporate them into the podcast.

We will definitely do a show on the Coen brothers, but it will have to be later down the line, as I have not seen many of them (although Joe has seen most). We also have Bergman, Kurosawa and Herzog on the list and will definitely consider Truffaut.

Thanks for all your comments and emails. Keep it up!

Martin Scorsese is one of the most compelling filmmakers of our time and still in america he's not appreciated. It's obvious you two haven't watched the Golden Globes when The Aviator was nominated.

Dick Clark approached him and asked why he feels he's not appreciated?

Scorcese' answer: People continue to MIS-PRONOUNCE MY NAME.

Dick Clark asks, FOR THE RECORD how should america should pronounce your name since in france we believed they have said it wrong.

Scorcese respond No, they like New Yorkers have the pronounciation skills to pronounce it correct. IT's SCORE SESS SEE not SCORE SAY ZEE.

Please Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, especially Melissa since you love saying is name a lot, pronounce it right. In recent commercials for The Departed the promoters are pronouncing it correctly.

Remember Marty's name is pronounced SCORE SESS SEE. ONE MORE TIME AND READ AS I WRITE: SCORE SESS SEE. Again Score SESS see. Again Score SESS see, and finally Score SESS see.

    Thank you

    Sam,

Are you serious? Next time you see "Marty" please extend our apologies. We are neither from France nor New York, so our rustic accents can interfere from time to time. We will work on this in preparation for our Scorsese show. We were probably distracted by all that "Burton" talk.

Very serious, Joe. And No, I'm not some whack job who hang around Marty's gate to hope he could touch my hand. This is something that bothers Mr. Scorsese and when I first heard his repulse I thought it was pretty petty... until my mom started mis-pronouncing my name for a whole week. After the annoyance I finally got it. Now I'm President of the pronounciation commitee so watch out I will be listening. And no I'm not serious.

    Anywho love your show.

Thank you very much for analyzing my comments I posted on your website after listening to the Steven Spielberg podcast. Just to clear any confusions with applying my name to the title of "he" or "she", I am a boy and I just turned 17. Along with both of you, I also enjoy talking about films and believe that the most important thing a film can achieve is sparking a conversation between individuals. To conclude my argument on your dislike of Saving Private Ryan I will say this; though I do not agree with your review of Saving Private Ryan, I wholeheartedly respect your reasons for not thinking highly of the film.
My reason for posting another comment relates to your review on Tim Burton, another favorite filmmaker of mine. His visually stunning and gothic stlye to his works make each one of them a marvel to view, even if some of the stories are a bit patchy and stale like Planet of the Apes. I would love to hear what you have to say about an apparent theme that exudes itself in many of Burton's films; the theme of the father and son relationship. It is most obvious in Burton's masterful film Big Fish, in which the eccentric father with a brilliant imagination, reveals his fairy tale life to his stern, no nonsense son. It is said Burton's father did not approve of his son's vibrant imagination and scorned him for choosing a career in art. Like another filmmaker who heavily deals with father- son relationships in his films (Steven Spielberg), Tim Burton seems to have a talent for creating touching, human dramas placed inside a fantastically eerie world of wonder.
I will close on a lighter, much less confusing, and more basic statement by saying that I highly enjoyed Nightmare Before Christmas, which wasn't directed by Burton but produced in the same way that Spielberg produced Poltergeist, though I was extremely disappointed with Burton's more recent stop motion animation film Corpse Bride. The pieces were in place with Danny Elfman's zany music and incredible partnership with Burton and also starred a Burton vet, Johnny Depp, who is the most entertaining actor to watch today. With beautiful set pieces and gothic architecture that pleases any lover of Burton's visual flair, the film, as a whole, falls on its face with a very lackluster story and, I dread to say it, a surprisingly unoriginal score by Elfman that includes songs that seem to have been regurgitated from his earlier work on Nightmare Before Christmas. I believe Burton has to discover that the story and dialogue of his films must be equally as zany and mesmerizing as his visuals.
Thank you for your reading ~A.J.~

posted by: A.J. on Sun, 9/10 03:27 PM EDT

Oh and one other thing, I would love to see Tim Burton make a film adaption of Edgar Allen Poe's The Tell Tale Heart. Also, can you imagine a Duel remake set in a eerie Burton desert landscape. His take on the menacing truck following Dennis Weaver's innocent character would be very interesting to view. The film might lose its realistic feel that was apparent in Spielberg's first film and would, no doubt, be strange, yet highly entertaining!
    Thanks again ~A.J.~

I liked your point on bad movies with high production values, and how they're "acceptable now". In my opinion, the B-Movie era of the 50's thru 70's is still very much alive. Only now, the budgets are way bigger, the effects are better, and the audience is bigger and broader. So these films are finding a dominant niche in our society, sad as that may be.

I blame it on the whole quantity over quality, "money now" idealism of the Hollywood system. Ever since Star Wars, the idea has been "Special Effects sells movies". But I believe nowadays, the audiences are getting smarter and demanding smarter storylines and better performances from actors, and it's apparent in the sinking box office sales.

"The death of Hollywood is... special effects." - Joseph Mankiewicz

Oh, and how dare that listener mention Uwe Boll as a potential director for the show. Boll is NOT a director, he's a businessman. The only reason why he gets to make movies is because he's formulated a scheme to basically do movies for free in his homeland of Germany and still get a big payback for himself. In Germany, if a film production employs more than a certain amount of crew, it's eligible for a tax credit that will cover the difference if the film's box office sales don't match that of it's production costs.

For instance, I believe his most recent film to be released cost roughly $45M. Well, it only made probably $8M, so the German government is giving him a tax credit of nearly $37M to cover his productions costs and enabling him to make yet another horrible film. If you can, look up the trailer for "In the Name of the King"...it's bound to be so horrible I just might have to go see it.

Since you stuck your toe in the cartoon waters by covering Tim Burton, does this mean you'd venture further into animation territory and cover a director who directs animation exclusively? I'd love to hear your take on animated films.

Interesting that you bring up animated film directors. We have considered that. In fact, look for a future WTD installment when we discuss a director who many may not recognize but who directed some of the most famous animated films.
