Joe watches too many movies. He grew up in central Washington, earned his B.A. in Education and Fine Art, an M.A. in Theology and currently works in the printing industry. Wow, I agreed with you on pretty much everything in this show, and yeah my ten was based on his entire career but i'm happy with it anyway, in the end I wouldn't have gone lower than a 9.6.
I think that something interesting that you didn't really talk about when recognizing most Hitchcock films is that he's very conscious that he's the one telling the story and keeps reminding you of it and he has a very good sense of humor with it. Like the scene in "Strangers" when Bruno is chasing Guy's ex--wife through the tunnel of love thing and she lets out the scream off camera. Also with the very specific yet irrelevant information at the beginning of Notorious, I think those kinds of touches coupled with the cameos show that he didn't really take himself too seriously and I think people responded and still do respond very heavily to that.
And by the way I agree with you on I Confess, it probably would've been my second pick on desert island, and it's a film that i don't think many people have seen and they should. I really don't know if I responded to it so heavily because i was raised Catholic but the moral dilemma just seemed so interesting and involving to me that it transcended the wrong man plot and i think it's a great example of Hitchcock's artistry within a fairly simple plot. So anyone reading who hasn't seen it, seek it out.

I remember years ago I researched the psychiatrist scene from Psycho, demanding some type of explanation or reason for why it was included in the film. I found out, don't remember where, that it was a scene Hitchcock shot after screening the original cut for Universal executives. Apparently they were so confused and didn't understand the Norman Bates character so much, that they demanded he insert an explanation for viewers (younger viewers probably) who simply would not get it.
It's my second favorite Hitchcock film, behind Vertigo, but I agree that the psychiatrist scene is something that needs to be ignored when viewing it.

I must say that I am a new fan of Hitchcock's films and I was surprised to learn that he had never received an Oscar.

Good observation, Victoria. Mrs. Danvers is indeed creepy. There are plenty of examples like this wherein Hitchcock plays with his characters and his audience in this way. Even in "Strangers on a Train" (which we discussed on the show) the relationship between Barbara Morton and her sister Anne verges on the obsessive.

Jamie, unfortunately, Goddard has directed mainly television and only a handful of feature films (most of which are not available). We would love to do a show on Truffaut, but we have a lot of catching up to do. The man directed a TON of films. We will keep looking for a way to do it sooner rather than later. I have been listening to the podcast and appreciate the time and effort you guys put into it and like your mix of classical and modern directors. I was looking forward to your show on Hitchcock since its always interesting to listen to fresh insight on the most famous(some would say influential) director of all time.
I liked the insight you put in, but I disagree with a couple of things.
Farley Granger - Many have knocked his performance down and Jon criticized the character as being weak but that's what makes him so convincing. He's a tennis player who may or may not have chosen his girlfriend based on her connections and the entire film is a morality play on guilt. He wants his wife dead(says so himself on that phone) and Bruno's presence is basically an externalization of that and how he copes with it is what makes it so compelling and it's a very good performance in that regard.

I am waiting to hear what you guys have to say about Ivan Reitman. He has been releasing flops of late like "Evolution" and "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" and his movie magic of the 80s seems to have worn off. I don't understand that Reitman can be a discussion of a show, while you will not discuss a director such as Michael Bay. I am not asking for a show about Bay, but am just curious as to what you see in Reitman. "Ghostbusters" was a great movie and I've heard great things about "Stripes" but what other memorable films has Reitman made besides maybe "Junior" or "Kindergarten Cop"?
"Shadow of a Doubt", yeah, I just saw that a couple weeks ago. Supposedly it was Hitch's favorite of all his films, and I can see why. It's a meshing of so many elements that he plays with in all his films. I love how it starts very bright, happy and we get a sense that we're in a perfect world, only to see it all crashing down soon after.
Not to mention, it's a great film and a lesson in cinematography. I was impressed with nearly every shot in it.

I've got a few thoughts on your podcast, which I mostly enjoyed, but not so much that it left me nothing to dispute. Here goes . . .
(1) I just can't, don't, and won't agree with the classification of "Rebecca" as a British film. It doesn't matter WHERE it was made (America); it doesn't matter what nationality its stars were, or that of the crew, or anything else along those lines. What matters is that on this film Hitchcock was working very closely -- too closely, some might say -- with David O. Selznick. I might revise that sentence to say that he was working FOR Selznick, in fact. If that's not a product of Hollywood, I don't know what is. Apart from the classification issue, though, I'm aware that a lot of Hitchcock fans devalue "Rebecca" due in part to its Selznicky touches, but I myself kind of feel like that just makes the Hitchcock touches that much more apparent. Either way, I think it's a great movie; I don't really care who gets the most credit for that.
(2) Am I the only "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" apologist out there? It's no masterpiece, I'll grant you, but it's a movie that gets unjustly shoved under the rug by almost all Hitchcock fans. Given that one of his cited charms is his sense of humor (dark though it may often be), isn't it kind of odd that nobody wants to talk about his very few actual comedies?
(3) Isn't it kind of random to separate Hitchcock's movies based on whether they were filmed in b&w or in color? That doesn't seem to me to be at all useful as a critical tool unless you're limiting your critique to the cinematography. A much more natural three-part division might have looked like this: Part One, silent films; Part Two, pre-1940 British talkies; Part Three, pre-TV films (in other words, the films made before the premiere of Alfred Hitchcock Presents turned the director into a legitimate superstar); and Part Four, post-TV films (the films made after the word Hitchcock became a household name). Not to be overly critical of the critics, but that's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it.
(4) Glad to see someone else appreciates "I Confess"! I consider that one and "The Wrong Man" as probably the top two that ought to be better known but aren't.

I'm with Melissa on this one. Hitchcock gets a 10. To my way of thinking, he's the greatest director ever. His body of work contains so many gems that it's almost too many to contemplate. You referenced Suspicion, an early favorite. That one certainly seemed to be heading toward a different ending. Glad to hear you mention Saboteur as well. That's another overlooked gem. I do agree, however, that Notorious stands out sharply among all of these, even above Strangers on a Train. For pure storyline, Strangers on a Train has it beat, especially with the ending scene, at the merry-go-round. For some reason, that scene seems to be more terrifying than anything in Psycho, maybe because you assume that such a child-friendly setting wouldn't be the place for such a violent and tense resolution. Notorious has it all, though, especially the Key sequence.
