Joe watches too many movies. He grew up in central Washington, earned his B.A. in Education and Fine Art, an M.A. in Theology and currently works in the printing industry. During school, he fit in a few film classes. He is interested in writing, theology and hopes to one day compose the ultimate Joe Versus the Volcano commentary track.

Melissa has a B.A. in History and an M.A. in English with an emphasis on Film Studies. She has taken classes on everything from silent to romance to post-colonial films and much in between. Her research and interests lie mainly in feminist film theory, women in film, Hitchcock and the studio era. At the end of the day, however, she just loves films; from Notorious to Die Hard!

Over thirteen years, Mel Gibson has only directed four movies - something that makes him ineligible for a normal WTD show. But two of those films were landmarks. Braveheart won the Best Picture and Best Director Oscar® in 1995. The Passion of the Christ created both controversy and an unbelievable popularity for an independent film. For those reasons, and because we really wanted to watch and talk about Apocalypto, we've thrown in a bonus program about a surprisingly important director.     Hey guys, sorry to inundate you again with a technical question. I'm a cinematographer, so I'm just naturally curious. But from the clips of the film that I've seen, there were many shots that looked very "video like". Like "Deja Vu", this film was also shot with the new Genesis camera.

    The shots I noticed that really lost that "film look" were certain action shots in the forest where there was a lot of motion blur. I've been told that it was because they had the shutter on the camera completely wide open 360 degrees...but I digress. Were you guys able to discern between the look of "Apocalypto" and other movies that have been shot on actual film?

    Hey guys! Thanks for another wonderful episode!
    I enjoy Gibson as a director, he always puts out solid, quality work. However, I find that because of the extremely graphic nature of his films, and increasingly so, I might add, I can't actually watch them. The last one I watched was "The Passion" and it took me several months to work up the courage to watch it after it came out on DVD. Because of the reviews I've heard about "Apocolypto", I know I will never see it. It makes me sad because I've heard it's really well done and a great film but those comments are always closely followed by: EXTREMELY graphic violence. My favorite movies are usually a little offbeat and make me think, but at the same time, on the rare occasion that I get to sit down and see a movie or actually go out to see a movie, I'd like the experience to be a relatively good one. I don't want to have to "suffer" through most of it, despite it's brilliant cinematography (sp?), excellent script, acting and so on. I too would like to see Gibson attempt another "tender" movie because he IS so capable. I would love to see another movie by him that I can let down my guard while watching rather than watch through the spaces between my fingers.
