Joe watches too many movies. He grew up in central Washington, earned his B.A. in Education and Fine Art, an M.A. in Theology and currently works in the printing industry. During school, he fit in a few film classes. He is interested in writing, theology and hopes to one day compose the ultimate Joe Versus the Volcano commentary track.

Melissa has a B.A. in History and an M.A. in English with an emphasis on Film Studies. She has taken classes on everything from silent to romance to post-colonial films and much in between. Her research and interests lie mainly in feminist film theory, women in film, Hitchcock and the studio era. At the end of the day, however, she just loves films; from Notorious to Die Hard!

From middle-class Chicago to the time-honored halls of USC, Robert Zemeckis is a truly American filmmaker. Together, with Steven Spielberg, he helped reinforce a blend of nostalgia and optimism that can be traced back to Frank Capra. On this episode, we'll see if there's more to Zemeckis than his similarity to other directors. We'll consider a solid array of landmark popular films ranging from Romancing the Stone to The Polar Express (and especially those inbetween - i.e. Back to the Future and Forrest Gump).     I'm glad you guys mentioned Contact. That is one of my favorite films by Zemeckis and one of the better films of 1997 in my opinion. I think Zemeckis gets stuck with the "mediocre filmmaker" label by many but he can certainly rise far above that. Contact, Forrest Gump and Cast Away show his talent as a story teller.

    Off current subject: I wonder if you guys would do a show on David Cronenberg. I'm not a fan of his films but I do think that he is an important film maker. Also, Jane Campion.

    When I think of Zemeckis I think big office - Forrest Gump, Cast Away, Roger Rabbit, Back to the Future. In general I have enjoyed these movies. The action and stories are terrific. He keeps things moving while still developing his characters just enough to be interesting. His one minor flaw, is his desire to draw out dramatic scenes beyond the breaking point where I just want to say "get on with it". (e.g., Back to the Future - Marty stop staring at your fist and punch the guy). But that is a minor quibble

    This is in regards to Tom's question concerning DVD commentaries that focus more on the filmmaker side of the film, the technical side, if you will.

    Subscribe to and study "American Cinematographer" magazine. Especially for new filmmakers, this is the best source for learning how the DP's of today are working on films that are in production. Also, check with your local Public Library for an archive of the magazine. For example, the one here in San Francisco has every issue from 1920 -1967 on microfilm, and from 1968 - Present in hardcopy.

    Occasionally you'll find a DVD that has extras focusing on the technical side of things. The Lord of the Rings extended versions are chalk full of goodies, also films like "La Belle et la bete" has a great segment all about Alekan and how he shot it.

    "Visions of Light" as Joe said is also a great DVD, but there's a new DVD from the ASC called "Cinematographer Style" which is even better, but probably not for your average movie viewer.

    In response to Victoria's suggestion: Jane Campion is on our list. Quite a few of her films are just now becoming available on DVD, so we have a few to catch up on. Look for her this summer, around the same time as the Coen Brothers (quite a pairing, eh?).

    And, thanks, Jon B. for your recommended DVDs/source material for aspiring filmmakers.

    Zemeckies stands out as a great inovater in film, espcially on a technical level. Roger Rabbit--blending animation and live action better than anyone had before. Polar Express--motion capture/3D animation. Even on some of his less memorable films, castaway for instance, the techincal use of FX are amazing. He defintiley does not shy away from trail blazing into new territory. Beowuld should be very interesting.

    I think he also inovative in story structure--Forest Gump, Back to the future trilogy, Contact

    Contact is a true desert island film (unlike castaway ;-). I seem to enjoy watching it again and again.

    hi, i have just started getting your podcasts, i have listened to about 4 of your shows, so far i think you have put in a good effort, only 2 things have bugged me, going on about your website & voting for it, once is enough & make it shorter =P. 2 when you did brian singer, when you talked about superman, you keep going on about how it wasnt as good as the first superman, & margot kidder was a better lois lane
    those are fair comments, once said fair enough, but to keep going on about the original when you are ment to be reviewing a modern version, it drove me NUTS. oh and another thing, why do you take brakes? all you have to do is pause it and we would never no you went away, listening to that song was alful on brain singer, (your a better singer than me, but still!) i would rather an even flow all the way threw.
    this all being said, you do alot of things right, i will keep getting your podcasts sent to me in new zealand =p. im looking forward to david fincher & hope you will do Robert Rodriguez.

    Ouch!
    BTTF II worse than Death Becomes Her? I love all the BTTF movies, and I think taking the characters back inside the original movie (1955) and showing events from a different POV is unique and inspired. What other movie has done that?

    Yes, the same gags were used in all three films (car/skateboard/horse, soda shop/Cafe 80's/bar), but this isn't the Godfather. BTTF was never took itself seriously, and it's telling that they decided to use it for the basis of a Saturday morning cartoon series.

    BTTF was never envisioned as a trilogy by the Bobs (Zemeckis and Gale). It was the studio who tacked the "To Be Continued..." to the end of the film only after it was released on video. Perhaps it would have been different if conceived as a trilogy, but they managed to give the studio and the audience more of what makes it Back to the Future without making it boring.

    I can't disagree with the review of What Lies Beneath. I hang on to the DVD because it's Zemeckis, and am fascinated by the fact that they shut down production on Cast Away for a year to let Hanks lose weight and grow hair, and filmed this other movie during the break.

    I own two other pairs of MBT SHOES but the MBT Fora is by far the most comfortable and best looking. I usually take a size 7 in MBT Fumba but needed a size 6.5 in this style.
