Joe watches too many movies. He grew up in central Washington, earned his B.A. in Education and Fine Art, an M.A. in Theology and currently works in the printing industry. During school, he fit in a few film classes. He is interested in writing, theology and hopes to one day compose the ultimate Joe Versus the Volcano commentary track.

Melissa has a B.A. in History and an M.A. in English with an emphasis on Film Studies. She has taken classes on everything from silent to romance to post-colonial films and much in between. Her research and interests lie mainly in feminist film theory, women in film, Hitchcock and the studio era. At the end of the day, however, she just loves films; from Notorious to Die Hard!

I understand that you guys didn't really like my recast of Gregory Peck as Bill. It was an odd choice, I know, but there is a method to my madness. QT takes actors and amp them to 11. However cool Travolta was in Grease and Saturday Night Fever, he was possibly the coolest person ever in Pulp Fiction. He did the same for Sonny Chiba and David Carradine in Kill Bill. He takes actors from different eras and makes them relevant to the people of today. So, for the people in college, like me, who don't know much about Gregory Peck, unlike me, Tarantino casting him as Bill would have been possibly the best idea ever.

Also, I totally agree with the "not enough Kurt Russell" complaint for Death Proof. He was so darn cool, but vastly underused.

posted by: Alex on Tue, 4/10 02:53 PM EDT

Alex, I'm a big fan of Gregory Peck and spent a lot of time with him for my MA thesis. I don't know that I didn't like the recast idea, just that I like Caradine as Bill. Of course, for all the reasons you point out about the possible recasting of Peck - he was all but forgotten and an unknown for many of Tarantino's fans, but QT was able to make him amazing to a whole new generation of viewers. It would definitely be interesting to see Peck in something a little more twisted, eh? He is so beautiful and charming...but that is what QT likes to do, re-imagine his actors as something they've never been before.

Thanks for the great 10 quiz and for the nod to Kurt Russell. On our old podcast, we had a running gag about Russell. I LOVE him, so I always hope he'll be listening and hear our shout out!

The second I got back from Grindhouse Friday night, I turned on the tv and there was Escape From New York. Needless to say, I had to watch it, even though it ended at 2 in the morning.

We watched "Escape from L.A." the night before recording the QT episode. You can't turn Kurt Russell off, especially "Escape from New York." Of course, my favorite is "Big Trouble in Little China!" A classic!

I'd just like to add that I believe this is the first show where Joe is seemingly giggling like a little school boy for the majority of the show. Ha ha!

It's interesting though, how QT DOES bring that out in all of us. "Grindhouse" was the most fun I've had at the theatre in a LONG TIME. I did quite a bit of giggling of my own.

posted by: Jon B. on Tue, 4/10 05:52 PM EDT

QT "decided to drop the exploitation idea?" I don't think you saw very many exploitation movies, "Grindhouse" movies in particular. They were often (mostly) pretty boring, stupidly talkie, and went nowhere until the action-horror-sexploit plot kicked in. The problem with Death Proof is that QT actually did go for making a grindhouse/exploitation movie and most audience members never went to a real exploitation double bill and only know about them since marketing for Grindhouse started a few months ago. A lot of reviews sound like they come from a point of view that says, "I don't like exploitation movies" and that should be the extent of those reviews. That would be valid. But to say that Death Proof drops the exploitation idea is just the opposite of the fact. That said, the characters were too witty and talked too much in that stylized QT way. Rodriguez's Planet Terror, on the other hand, while being an awful lot of grossout fun had only it's core plot in common with actual grindhouse movies. It was actually too fast, too expensive, with too many special effects among other things. If the idea was to pay homage to the grindhouse, Tarantino was pretty close, as was Eli Roth and the way-too-sick Thanksgiving trailer. All-in-all, it's the reason for the negative reaction to Death Proof that proves QT is a great director. He has so much control over everything and knows exactly what his movies are supposed to convey. In the case of Death Proof, the confident control of his filmmaking style sabotaged his desire to make a Grindhouse movie.

Like your show BTW. Discovered it yesterday. Cheers.

I wonder if anyone has read the interesting paper on Kill Bill by Michael Crowley at 24liesasecond - http://www.24liesasecond.com/site2/index.php?page=2&task=index_onearticle.php&Column_Id=78

It has a really interesting take on some possible meaning behind the film (and I treat the two as one which I think was the original intention.) Certainly he's able to recoincile the quite different feel of both films and some of the stranger elements of the two with the notion of redemption.
    I highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed Death Proof- but I felt like the trademark dialogue scenes nearly fell flat. It felt to me as if QT was almost making a tribute to himself. He hit gold with the diner conversation scene in REsevoir dogs, so why do it again?

posted by: Patrick on Wed, 4/11 04:07 AM EDT

Great show. I was surprised by Joe's director score. QT has really made one masterpiece "Pulp Fiction" and I thought we were suppose to score based on body of work rather than one or two great movies. Maybe I was being conservative. I was also not sure why Kill Bill Vol.2 was a surprise as the worst movie pick by me and another listener. Maybe I didnt get it. But I thought there was lack of chemistry between Kiddo and Bill that made the last 20 mins of the movie quite boring. I knew I would be raising a few eyebrows by my pick to replace Pam Grier as Jackie Brown with Melanie Griffith. I really dont know why I thought of Melanie other than she seems to have a airline hostess type of a personality (vulnerable yet deceptive). I am ashamed to say that I havent seen much of Hitchcock colored work other than Vertigo and Birds. So look forward to learn more about him.

I stand alone as the only person who doesn't like Tarantino (well, my wife also, but on one posting here). However, I do like your show, and Duke was a fun guest. I want to do a guest spot now.

posted by: Chris Vander Kaay on Wed, 4/18 05:46 PM EDT

I disagree that his films can't be rewatched - I've found I enjoyed all the ones I've seen more second time around, and if there's a limit to the amount of times they can be seen again, I haven't reached it yet (Res Dogs - 5 times since new year, and counting...I'm a lost cause...)

More than any other director, his personality influences his films. He made Grindhouse because he likes exploitation movies; he wanted to make a kung-fu film, out comes Kill Bill. They're all labours of love, with songs he likes, references to films he likes - indeed, it'd be fair to say he only ever makes films for himself, never mind whether we're willing to follow.

Which it seems we are. His reputation is amazing though - Pulp Fiction has given him a sort of VIP-ticket to make whatever he likes. General consensus is that it's all been downhill since 1994, and yet he's still being allowed to make movies. Long may it continue!

posted by: Ninquelosse on Thu, 4/19 04:26 AM EDT

    Saad,
Okay so here's why I believe Kill Bill 2 to be unbelievably brillant: because it did nothing it was "supposed" to. It so easily could have been a vol.1 remake, but it wasn't. It completely changed pace and story. She doesn't even kill 2 of the 3 people left on her list and the grand climax epic battle sequence doesn't even get the heroes out of their chairs! David Carradine turns in one the best performances of all time...(it makes me weep now everytime I see him on tv hawking the yellow pages). I actually thought they had good chemistry and that the young girl's acting was fantastic. I can definetly see how fans of the first one were dissapointed if they expected this one to be "bigger" and "louder" than the first one, but the fact that it doesn't even try to is what makes it one of my all time favorite QT movies.

    Cam,
You are absolutely right. Kill Bill Vol. II did nothing it was supposed to. Maybe that’s why I didn’t get it. It was QT’s homage to Hong Kong martial art cinema and as you know those movies center on the last epic fight scene. Take any Bruce Lee movie and the thing that you most remember about them is the last fight scene between the hero and the villain. QT was building it up since the very first scene of the Vol. I, Uma’s signature line “I am gonna KILL BILL?. But when they finally meet the movie turns into a boring daytime soap ending in an anticlimactic fight scene lasting for less than few seconds. I have seen every QT movie at least 5 times or more, but Kill Bill Vol. II is the only movie I couldn’t watch twice. By the way I love that Yellow page.com ads, its hilarious.

    Hey CBuck.

Thanks for you comment. I think you nailed me on my own misconception of what Grindhouse (the movie style) was. SLATE had this great article on the subject: "Grindhouse Nostalgia is Lame"

posted by: Joe Johnson on Sun, 4/29 04:54 PM EDT

Thank you for turning me on to the Slate article. I'm in agreement with it, for the most part even though I actually do like those exploitation movies. Not necessarily the movies themselves, but the fact that these people just went and made the movies instead of just endlessly talking about doing it. And sometimes, rarely, something good came out of it. I did disagreed with the comments on Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls, however. BTVOTD was actually a studio pic that was supposed to bring Fox back from the brink of collapse. It wasn't grindhouse exploitation, it was just bad (in great way!). Other than that, the article was good. Thanks for a great show and a pretty interesting viewpoint on movies. I'll be listening!
