Joe watches too many movies. He grew up in central Washington, earned his B.A. in Education and Fine Art, an M.A. in Theology and currently works in the printing industry. During school, he fit in a few film classes. He is interested in writing, theology and hopes to one day compose the ultimate Joe Versus the Volcano commentary track.

Melissa has a B.A. in History and an M.A. in English with an emphasis on Film Studies. She has taken classes on everything from silent to romance to post-colonial films and much in between. Her research and interests lie mainly in feminist film theory, women in film, Hitchcock and the studio era. At the end of the day, however, she just loves films; from Notorious to Die Hard!

WTD23: Curtis Hanson
Curtis Hanson created this generation's Purple Rain (8 Mile). He also spent a solid decade turning Hitchcock suspense formula films into a career path. But in 1997, Hanson stumbled across - or engineered - a change in direction with a classic modern film noir, the critically and popularly adored L.A. Confidential. His subsequent films have been small character studies, more concerned with finding home than homicides. On this episode of WTD, we look at Hanson's last twenty years, including our 10 Quizes and a review of the theatrical release, Lucky You.

    Another great show guys.

    I think I have to agree with Jason that "The Wonder Boys" is Hanson's best film. "LA Confidental" is a great film that does everything right that "The Black Dalhia" did wrong. However, as simple and quiet as "The Wonder Boys" is, it's just another example of how Curtis far exceeds what so many other films try to do. This movie is soooo rewatchable and grows with each and every viewing like a fine wine.

    I'm also curious if anyone else remembers "Bad Influence"? This movie is absoulutely stuck in it's time period but for what it was it was very good. Probably the best thing about it was the reverse casting of Rob Lowe & James Spader. Up to that point Rob had mostly been the romantic leading every man and Spader had been the classic Yuppie foil. In this movie you could really see them relishing their new roles. Especially Lowe who gives one of his absoulute best and creepiest performances.

    I'm just catching up, and enjoying the shows. Yesterday I enjoyed the Curtis Hansen show, and I'd like to comment on your view that (paraphrased) LA Confidential was a successful attempt at taking the noir genre which is primarily a mood and adding complexity to achieve about all that can be achieved using the noir style. I agree that LA Confidential was wonderful, but I don't believe that Hansen expanded upon noir, but rather operated beautifully within it. Through the invluence of others more scholoarly that me, I've come to believe that the term noir not only describes the visual style (high-contrast, low-key, chiroscuro lighting, extreme angles, etc.) but elements such as unusually complex plot, and the moral ambiguous leading man who is powerless to resist the exquisite but venomous femme fatale. So, while I agree with your placement of LA Confidential among the greatest neo-noir films, I'd like to defend the depth and completeness of the noir art form.
