ABOUT US

Joe watches too many movies. He grew up in central Washington, earned his B.A. in Education and Fine Art, an M.A. in Theology and currently works in the printing industry. During school, he fit in a few film classes. He is interested in writing, theology and hopes to one day compose the ultimate Joe Versus the Volcano commentary track.

Melissa has a B.A. in History and an M.A. in English with an emphasis on Film Studies. She has taken classes on everything from silent to romance to post-colonial films and much in between. Her research and interests lie mainly in feminist film theory, women in film, Hitchcock and the studio era. At the end of the day, however, she just loves films; from Notorious to Die Hard!

EPISODES

The first episode of season 2 is a marathon look at Stanley Kubrick, the revered mind behind Spartacus, Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey and a few films that will make your skin crawl while you waltz. Joe and Melissa are joined by Duke, who was last heard on the Tarantino episode and now co-hosts the podcast Degree of Separation. Together, they attempt to discuss the essence of Kubrick, the work and mastery of one of cinema's most respected and enigmatic directors. Along the way, mail and 10 Quizes piled up and the show tries to answer that most asked of questions: "Does anyone like Eyes Wide Shut?"

    Hi guys.
Loved this episode, despite the fact I'm not much of a Kubrick fan. You guys should get Duke in more - you all laugh a lot and seem to have much more fun when he's around. It's infectious.
As for Kubrick, I recognise his technical skill, but I don't find many of his films particularly entertaining or interesting.
I'm a bit of a space film junkie, but I have to admit to finding 2001 pretty ordinary. I much prefer Tarkovsky's Solaris.
I'm sure this'll get me some hate mail, but hey, that's movies. We all have our own tastes.
Looking forward as ever to future episodes.
    Cheers,
    Andrew

All right, I just recently wrote my MA thesis on Lolita, so I need to take issue with the comment that Clare Quilty was more interesting in the film than he was on paper. While I loved Peter Sellers's performance, such a goofy portrayal seemed like a best attempt-- on the parts of both Kubrick and Nabokov, who worked on the screenplay-- to translate some of the character's bizzare personality to the screen. Like Sellers' Quilty, C.Q. of the novel is witty to be sure, but he is also menacing, dangerous, and an ever-present figure woven into the rich tapestry of word-play and references that Humbert Humbert creates in his confession. In fact, many critics argue that Humbert and Quilty are one and the same, and there are some fascinating theories to defend this argument.

None of this takes away from what I find to be one of Kubrick's more enjoyable films, but I just need to defend my books from you philistine movie lovers. I'll go pout in the corner now.

On a more sane note, I agree with Andrew that having Duke on the program brought a lot of energy to the show, and the good time you guys were having was infectious. I hope he can come back soon.

Desperately looking forward to that Coen Brothers show,

    Hey guys,

Enjoyed the episode except for one thing. I think "2001" is not one of the best films of all time, but rather one of the most self-indulgent and boring ones. I hated to see his perfect technical scores when he over did-it so much for this movie. "Paths of Glory" and "Dr. Strangelove" are far better. Still anxiously awaiting the Woody Allen show.

    Hey,

good Kubrick show. I just wanted to agree with one of the write-ins for essential scene: the prehistoric man throwing the bone into the sky, which then transforms into a satellite. This scene is quintessential Kubrick to me, in that it is the moment in man's history where he learns to uses not just tools, but weapons. The ape-man is celebrating what he thinks is a wonderful gift, for hunting, for self-defence, and ecstatically throws the bone into the air like a graduation cap, where it transforms into an orbiting nuclear weapons platform. This is one of the dominant recurring themes I see in Kubrick: the downfall of man through his own hubris or lack of self-awareness.

thanks again, really enjoyed this one.

Thank you for the Kubrick show! With the exception of Spartacus I'm not a fan. His films are too sterile and cold for my taste but I do respect the precise technical skill and the sharp storytelling behind his work.

I will be checking out your other podcast pretty soon. Watching Theology. Sounds exciting!

Enjoyed the episode. I kind of dread reading/listening about Kubrick at this point because what else is there to say really? If you like movies you're supposed to like Kubrick, and at the same time you're also supposed to know that his films are cold and sterile and bleak. I'm kind of tired of that criticism and I'm glad you all pointed out how funny many of his films are. My first memory of a Kubrick film is watching Full Metal Jacket and though I'm not oblivious to the seriousness of this film, I always tend to think of it as a comedy simply because it was R. Lee Ermey's performance and lines that stuck with me through the years. I have a similar feel for Clockwork, and Lolita is also a very funny film at times. Though the outlook may be dreadful in much of his work, Kubrick was a master at showing people enjoying life and pursuing the enjoyment of life in unconventional ways - Slim Pickens on the bomb, Modine doing John Wayne impressions during a war, Alex and violence, Humbert and his obsession. The absurdity of it is what makes it so funny and fun to watch. I think his style and his autonomy perhaps leads us to watch his films as something more serious than Kubrick perhaps intended himself.

Lastly, I think you got the dvd recommendation wrong. Absolutely should be the documentary Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures. It's a little difficult to find, but does a good job of tearing away at the sort of mythical status that Kubrick obtained while working outside of Hollywood.

I had already written Joe and Melissa an email regarding how badly and completely I thought Kubrick (who I consider among the giants of cinema) had missed the mark with his version of Lolita. I’d read the novel in college and had been taken with how the book was simultaneously humorous and dark, and ultimately very tragic . . . and in awe that such beautiful incisive prose and wordplay could be the product of a writer whose first language was not English.

Peter Sellers’ over the top, almost flippant depiction of Quilty as an intellectual fop, I thought completely changed the original character which was clever, mysterious, and inherently evil. Adrian Lynne’s Lolita (while an imperfect film) emphasized the dark and tragic elements, but was on the whole more faithful to the novel and the characters (I greatly preferred Jeremy Irons to Mason, and Frank Langella to Sellers). For all of Kubrick’s genius I have always felt that his Lolita did a great disservice to the mood and intent of the original work.

But lo and behold, Joe G points out in his comments that Kubrick collaborated on the film/script with Nabokov himself, and that there are critical interpretations which propose that Humbert and Quilty are actually the same person . . . I did not know either of those facts and now am left wondering if I didn’t miss something . . . did Nabokov actually give his blessing to Seller’s interpretation of Quilty . . . I find it hard to believe (or accept) . . .if so, I must have missed something crucial in the book . . .

Does anyone agree with me or is it just my memory that does not serve me well . . .

I did a little further research and found this tidbit on Wikipedia (not an unimpeachable source) . . . somehow it makes me feel a little better . . .

The screenplay is credited to Nabokov, although very little of what he provided (later published in a shortened version) was used. Nabokov remained polite about the film in public, but in a 1962 interview, before seeing the film, commented that it may turn out to be "the swerves of a scenic drive as perceived by the horizontal passenger of an ambulance".

If I heard correctly, it was stated in the podcast that "Kubrick's wife" shot "The Making of the Shining" found on the DVD. This is incorrect. This documentary was shot by daughter Vivian, who also does the commentary for the documentary.

Also, does anyone know why the new 2-disc The Shining is listed as 119 minutes with online retailers? This would be a serious cut to the other 2 DVD releases.
